Sunnybrook 8-Game Fun

Last night I played in what I believe is the first (unconfirmed) spread of an 8-game in a Michigan poker room.  We attempted running this a couple of years back at Greektown, but Gaming rules prevented us from spreading the stud games.  Well, last night, the dream of several Detroit area poker players became a reality, when Sunnybrook Poker Room in Sterling Heights spread the first 8-game mix in Michigan.

The game consisted of round by round play, starting with 2-7 Triple Draw, Limit Hold’Em, Limit Omaha 8 or Better, Limit Razz, Limit Stud, Limit Stud Hi Lo, No Limit Hold’Em and Pot Limit Omaha. It was a blast.  Blinds were $4/$8 for the limit games, and $1/$2 for the big bet games.  The button paid an ante of $1 for every two players in the stud games. The game started at about 4:30 PM and stayed going until 2 AM.  The table was full most of the night and ended 6-handed.

For those of you that have not played this game, it really stretches you to play well in all varieties of poker.  You have to be able to be aggressive with your draws in the Omaha and Stud games, and play the odds correctly in the hold’em games.  The triple draw game was particularly tough at this table, and it usually took a 7 high hand to win.  The group of players that came to play the game was very fun with lots of gambling, bluffing, and leveling the whole night.

Since most of the games were limit, I knew a strategy of slow stack building was needed. But I wanted to have the game be fun too, so I had to splash around and try to hand out bad beats where possible.  I chased every straight flush draw out there, and got there once. But mostly it was about enjoying the moment and playing the games I really enjoy.  I played 2-7 triple draw and stud hi lo at a card room in the same night!  Just awesome.

What games other than Hold-Em do you enjoy?  If you were at a room that spread a mixed game, would you jump in and try to learn some of the games you weren’t familiar with, or just stay away?

The players had such a good time last night, they’re already talking about making this a monthly game.  Would be good to see you out there, so come out and join us next time!
